Windermere (Lake Windermere)
Windermere is England’s largest natural Lake District fed by numerous rivers and for centuries aided transportation for heavy materials. Protected since 1951, its valleys, woodlands and lush green make this beautiful picturesque countryside an ideal area to experience the great outdoors. Surrounding Windermere are towns and villages where tourists can shop, eat and rest. Approximately one mile from the lake lays a railway station, Lakeside Pier and Aquarium of the Lakes where the world of wildlife and freshwater creatures are revealed. It’s a destination spot for cruises, sailors, rowers and swimmers, but that doesn’t mean adventure is limited! There is Treetop Trek Aerial, Climb 365 and High Adventure Balloon Flights for extreme adrenaline enthusiasts, family-friendly cycle fun, hound trailing, horseriding and even bird spotting. Windermere is a fun outdoor getaway for all ages!
Caernarfon
Caernarfon, Wales, is one of the most Welsh of Welsh cities. This walled town is a place where visitors can still hear spoken Welsh.
Caernarfon also has close royal connections—it was there that Edward I's son was made the first Prince of Wales in 1301. Charles, the current Prince of Wales, became prince in 1969.
Be sure to see the castle and museum. Travelers can ride the Snowdon Mountain and Llanberis Lake railways. Caernarfon is 181 mi/291 km northwest of Cardiff and is a great spot for an overnight stay.
Pembrokeshire Coast National Park
Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is an area of cliffs, lighthouses, sandy beaches, wildflowers and small resort towns.
The park skirts the coast of Pembrokeshire, beginning to the west of Cardigan and continuing almost to Pendine. It includes St. David's and the picturesque town of Tenby, with its magnificent beaches.
In addition to its coastal features, the park bows inland to include the Preseli Hills, which yielded the famous blue stones used in the construction of part of Stonehenge. The picturesque Gwaun Valley makes a lovely, lazy drive—best reached from the pretty village of Newport.
Small castles at Carew and Manorbier are well worth visiting, as are the lily ponds at Bosherston. A long-distance footpath tracks the coast for nearly 186 mi/299 km—one of the highlights is the miniature stone chapel of St. Govan's, set in a cleft beneath a cliff 10 mi/16 km south of Pembroke. There you can see a striking castle by the river where Henry Tudor, later Henry VII, was born.
Nature reserves on the islands of Skokholm and Skomer can be reached from Martins Haven.
