Broken Hill is a historic mining city in New South Wales that has gained recognition as the boldest of the Australian outback towns since its birth as a little mining village in the 1880s. Broken Hill has seen war and much hardship through the years, beginning with The Battle of Broken Hill in 1915. The well-preserved town is now a living museum with artifacts and monuments, paying homage to the men and women who suffered so the town could survive. Broken Hill draws visitors from all around to view the nationally significant heritage and enjoy the authentic experiences. Films such as Mad Max 2 were filmed on location at Broken Hill, giving it a world-wide reputation.
Barossa Valley
The Barossa Valley is located in South Australia, approximately 70 km from Adelaide, the state’s capital city. The Barossa Valley has something to do for everyone – trails for cycling and walking, shopping, galleries and museums, golf, and a range of enjoyable options for families. The Barossa is world-famous for its wine culture and rich food heritage, and the valley is said to hold some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world.
Cook
This town is a railway station established in 1917 that delivered tea and sugar, Cook stretches from Ooldea to Loongana, South Australia. Present-day, Cook is a ghost town that welcomes overnight train drivers providing accommodations to those whom are intrigued by the history of Cook.
Kalgoorlie
The town of Kalgoorlie, 375 mi/600 km east of Perth in Western Australia, is still considered the Queen of the Golden Mile, a gold vein discovered in 1893 that contains one of the richest lodes ever found.
Kalgoorlie's 20,000 residents continue to make their living from mining. You can descend 200 ft/60 m underground to tour the drifts of the old Hannan's North Tourist Mine. You can also see gold ingots being poured, view the nuggets at the Museum of the Goldfields and go pub hopping in the classic Outback pubs.
Neighboring Coolgardie (25 mi/40 km west) is nearly a ghost town—but it still has the Goldfields Exhibition housed in a handsome old building dating from the boom days. We found a two-day visit to these cities very worthwhile. The area can be reached from Perth by air, train or car (it's a seven-hour drive).
