Gettysburg is where the turning point of the Civil War occurred from July 1 - 3, 1863. Richmond
Richmond is the capital of the state of Virginia and a seaport at the head of the James River. Museums in the city include the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of the Confederacy, and the Edgar Allan Poe Museum. Points of interest include St John's Episcopal Church (1741), where in 1775 the American statesman Patrick Henry made an impassioned speech for independence containing the famous words, "give me liberty or give me death". Of special interest is the State Capitol (1785-1788), modelled after a Roman temple in Nîmes, France. Richmond National Battlefield Park, commemorating American Civil War battles fought over possession of the Confederate capital, is near the city. Fort Charles was constructed in 1644 to protect the settlers from attack by Native Americans. Richmond became the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1780 and in 1861 was made the capital of the Confederate States of America; as such it was a major objective of Union forces during the American Civil War.

Shenandoah National Park
Shenandoah National Park lies astride a beautiful section of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which form the eastern rampart of the Appalachian Mountains between Pennsylvania and Georgia. The Shenandoah River flows west through the valley, with Massanutten Mountain standing between the river's north and south forks. Rolling Piedmont country lies east of the park. Skyline Drive, a 105-mile road that winds along the crest of the mountains through the length of the park, provides vistas of the spectacular landscape to east and west. The park holds more than 500 miles of trails, including 101 miles of Appalachian Trail, that follow a ridge crest or lead to high places with panoramic views or to waterfalls in deep canyons. Animals flourish among the rich growth of oak-hickory forest. In season, flora blooms along the Drive and trails and fills open spaces. Apple trees, stone foundations, and cemeteries are reminders of the families who called this place home. Shenandoah National Park has a world of beauty that can renew and bring peace to the spirit.
