Evora is considered a seat of learning with its University founded in 16th Century by Cardinal Dom Henrique. Within the surrounding wall the most prominent feature is the 2nd or 3rd Century ruins of a Roman Temple dedicated to Goddess Diana. Another attractive feature is the 15th Century Convento dos Lóios. The city’s 13th century cathedral took 50 years to build and is reminiscent of a fortress. The main square with its 16th Century fountain has a sad history. Among other events, Dom João II witnessed the beheading by his orders of his brother-in-law. Equally unpleasant were the sights caused by the Inquisition in this public place. A macabre reminder is the Capela dos Ossos in the 15th Century Igreja de São Francisco - where the bones of 5,000 monks lie. There are several museums - the Museu de Arte Sacra, Galeria de Arte Casa Cadaval, the Museu de Artes Decorativas Religiosas and the Museu de Évora. The museum, formerly the palace of the Bishop, built with many worked stones from previous buildings in the city, has some outstanding religious items.

This Wine Estate is mentioned for the first time in a document dated April 1738, where it is referred to as "the Pacheca" because it was owned by D. Mariana Pacheco Pereira. However, it was only in 1903 that Dom José Freire de Serpa Pimentel decided to develop his interest in oenology, bought the property and began to devote to the winemaking business.

This wine estate is located in the surroundings of Aldeia Galega and it spreads over the sunny hills’ of Alenquer, a Delimited Region in the northwest of Lisboa. Its historical and excellent vineyards are known since the 16th century and have belonged to Diogo Duff, a brave Scottish man who received the "Tower and Sword" insignia, given by King João VI. Alice and Paulo Tavares da Silva bought the estate in the 1980s and made significant investments in its 45ha of vineyard. The introduction of new cultivation methods has allowed the family to consolidate the quality and reputation of their wines.
In an accompanied visit, you can get to know the wine making technology and methods used in the Quinta to produce their elegant wines, learning every step of the wine process. After understand how the wines are produced, see for yourself how they are stored during the ageing process that gives them some of their most typical characteristic. Follows a private and lectured wine tasting, lectured by the responsible for the oenology department, Sandra Tavares da Silva, the daughter of the owners, or by the resident oenologist, so you can confirm the high quality of their product. The family will invite you for lunch at their house.
Sandra is making wines in both Estremadura and the Douro, which necessitates travelling between the two regions three times a week. Since then her day job has been as winemaker for Christiano Van Zeller at Quinta do Vale D. Maria in the Douro. The origins of this estate and its winemaking activities, date back to the prehistoric times of the megalithic cultures and the Bronze Age. Already during the Roman occupation, the wines of the settlement were exported to the whole Empire. The boundaries of the estate were established in 1267 and have remained practically unaltered since then.

Tomar
The hillside centerpiece of the small town of Tomar, Portugal, is the 12th-century castle built by the crusading Order of the Knights Templar and the later monastery built around it. The entire complex is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Charola, a 16-sided structure surrounding a gilt octagon, served as the knights' oratory. Several cloisters were added to the complex at different stages, most of them reflecting the power and prestige of the Order of Christ (successor to the Knights Templar order) and its role during the age of exploration.
Also worth seeing in Tomar is one of the oldest synagogues in Portugal, dating back to 1430 but last used as a place of worship in 1496, when the Jews were expelled from the country by Manuel I. It now houses a small Jewish museum.

The hillside centerpiece of the small town of Tomar, Portugal, is the 12th-century castle built by the crusading Order of the Knights Templar and the later monastery built around it. The entire complex is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Charola, a 16-sided structure surrounding a gilt octagon, served as the knights' oratory. Several cloisters were added to the complex at different stages, most of them reflecting the power and prestige of the Order of Christ (successor to the Knights Templar order) and its role during the age of exploration.
Also worth seeing in Tomar is one of the oldest synagogues in Portugal, dating back to 1430 but last used as a place of worship in 1496, when the Jews were expelled from the country by Manuel I. It now houses a small Jewish museum.
On a lighter note, the largest collection of matchboxes in Europe can be seen at the Museu dos Fosforos.
