Paseo de Gracia in Barcelona

The Paseo de Gracia, or Passeig de Gràcia in Catalan, is one of the main avenues of Barcelona and one of the most famous avenues in Spain, due to its importance for tourism, shopping, business and a great showcase of outstanding works of modernist architecture as the buildings of architects Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Domenech i Montaner, declared a World Heritage Site.

Before becoming the Paseo de Gracia, the avenue was a typical country road linking the town of Grace (independent municipality until 1897) to the Old Town of Barcelona that began at the Portal del Angel. The Paseo de Gracia was opened in 1827 with 42 meters wide and was the favorite place for the aristocracy to display their skills in the art of horse riding and their fancy cars, throughout the nineteenth century. By this time the avenue was one of the most popular recreational areas of the city, with cafes, restaurants, dance halls, theaters and attractions.

This avenue was to be a crucial axis in the process of establishing the Cerdà’s Eixample project, between 1860-1890. The Paseo de Gracia will become the main street of a low density residential area made of single-family buildings. In the nineties of the nineteenth century, gradually all this part of Barcelona was acquiring a commercial prominence attracting the bourgeoisie, which led to replace the houses with garden to apartment buildings.

Finally, between 1900 and 1914 the Paseo de Gracia was consolidated as the main bourgeois residential center with the creative input of the modernist architects, Antoni Gaudi, Josep Puig, Lluis Domenech i Montaner, Enric Sagnier, etc., That dignified existing buildings and built new homes (“Casa” in Spanish) either singular forms, as the Casa Mila, the Casa Batllo, the Casa Lleó Morera or the Casa Amatller, to name the best known. In 1906 the architect Pere Falqués i Urpí, designed the famous banks-lampposts distributed throughout the Paseo de Gracia.

The Majestic Hotel & Spa is located at number 68 Paseo de Gracia, surrounded by the most glamorous boutiques of fashion such as Armani, Burberry, Bvlgari, Carolina Herrera, Cartier, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Guess, Hermes, Jimmy Choo, Loewe, Louis Vuitton, Roberto Verino, Salvatore Ferragamo, Tiffany & Co., Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, among others.
