When Cornishman Robert Trewhella built his dream villa on Sicily’s Bay of Mazzarò, little could he have known the celebrity haunt it would become. This is Villa Sant’Andrea, a Belmond Hotel in Taormina Mare. Engineer Trewhella was instrumental in building Italy’s infrastructure, including the Sicilian railways. Having been captivated by the picturesque bay, he and his wife constructed a summer house right by the water in 1919. Their son transformed it into a hotel in the 1950s, after which it attracted a roll call of glamorous guests, from the cream of Sicilian society to Al Pacino.

However eminent the clientele, the secluded hideaway still feels like a beautiful private home. Set in subtropical gardens, it boasts a heated infinity pool overlooking the crystalline bay, open-air wellness treatments and stylish cabanas on the pebble beach. Guests can soak up the view from their private loungers, sip cocktails served by the beach butler or plunge in with snorkels to explore the hidden coves.

Lavish, light-filled accommodation reflects the Sicilian palette. Balconies bloom with jewel-like geraniums. In the garden-inspired Scented Suites, details include copper bathtubs, bright ceramics and vintage movie posters. At the acclaimed restaurant, freshly caught fish and decadent Sicilian desserts are enhanced by shimmering sea views. The bar provides an enchanting spot for daytime granita or scenic sundowners. Romantic dinners can be set up on the beach. Tailor-made activities embrace nautical, culinary and volcanic adventures. Building on our vibrant history, we invite guests to join us for an exclusive experience, which includes a fascinating boat trip with a surprising ending. Leaving from the hotel’s private beach, they will head towards Acitrezza to meet the last master boat builders in the area, who have been crafting wooden fishing vessels since 1908. As lunchtime approaches, guests will reach Catania and will be invited to an ancient palazzo for a private lunch with the owner, Rosalba Cutore and her family - the former neighbors of the Trewhella family, who built Villa Sant’Andrea back in 1919.

annexe, Casa Manley, these double rooms feature either
a balcony, a small terrace or a window with a wonderful
view of the Bay of Mazzarò. They are all furnished with
a king-size or twin beds and have a marble bathroom
with a bathtub or a shower. One room is connecting
with a Deluxe Sea View Room.

Our sumptuous suite is characterised by simple lines in harmony with the colours and natural features of the environment. Overlooking the clear waters of the bay, it reflects the locale with elements of wood, stone and flowers and furniture inspired by local Sicilian craftsmanship. The marble bathroom boasts a beautiful freestanding tub with copper and brass finishes. Captivating artwork recalls classic movies and Taormina’s film festival. Two-Bedroom Pool Suite

For those seeking the ultimate space, this suite offers two bedrooms, a lavish separate living area and two bathrooms, one with a separate bathtub and shower, the other with just a shower. Stunning sea views are afforded from the expansive 60 sq m terrace, a blissful sanctuary furnished with a gazebo, sofa and bench. It also boasts a 2x6m heated private pool and a 40 sq m wooden solarium furnished with table and chairs, sunbeds and umbrella.
