Delightful Holiday in Mexico City
'Tis the season! As the year comes to an end what better way to bid the year goodbye than in Mexico City? The most alluring capital of Latin America is ready to welcome its visitors and give them a warm experience during the most magical time of the year.
When people take out their scarfs and carols start to sound, the iconic avenue Paseo de la Reforma blooms with nochebuenas, also known as poinsettias. The Zocalo, our emblematic plaza, lights up in beautiful ornaments that cover entire facades. The hotspots of the city bring out their best looks and ask to be enjoyed with a cup of hot punch.
Santa Claus is coming to town, but you can pay him a visit too! South of the city, in Xochimilco, the Caltongo pier offers a tour aboard a traditional trajinera, which will take you to a Christmas town where you can meet Santa in person. Sure, children can still use the postal service, but wouldn't it be better to hand him the letter in person? After that, you can attend a Pastorela, the traditional play that recreates the biblical passage where the shepherds followed the Bethlehem star to find the Christ Child, while enjoying traditional mexican food.
The capital of Latin America stands out for its cultural offer. You can take a closer look at the lives of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera at the Dolores Olmedo Museum, with almost 50 paintings that have been showcased all around the world. The Mother's Monument is hosting Van Gogh Alive, the most visited multisensory exposition in the world, which features over 3,000 images, surround sound and dozens of projectors. The Soumaya museum with its impressive architecture and the Modern Art Museum join this must-visit list if you come for the holidays.
Mexico prides itself on its worldwide known food. Be pampered by the original culinary approaches of Quintonil or the timeless seasoning of Pujol, both of which have been awarded as part of 'The World's 50 Best Restaurants'.

Barragán's Houses Tour: 3 architectural jewels
So many things can be said about Luis Barragán house. One could mention that it is the only individual property in all of Latin America to be acknowledged as World Heritage by the UNESCO, or that it is of cultural value to know the residence of a world wide known architect, winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, who was in charge of modeling some of the most original buildings in Mexico. But everyone who has ever set foot on the house would agree that the most important reason to visit it is the aesthetic experience of walking trough it. It is a time capsule in the sense that everything remains the same as if Barragán was to walk through the door at any time, but it also possesses a dynamic character given by the innumerable details that it holds. New features show up upon a second glance as if the house was alive, and in a sense it is. A chamber might reveal a previously hidden window, and the proportions between walls shift as one walks by. It changes its moods through the day, as if many houses were contained in one.
If you wish to live the ultimate experience, allow us to recommend you three more architectural jewels that are within walking distance from Barragán house.
Right next to it we can find Ortega house. It is the genesis of Barragán’s career as an architect. The seeds of what would define his work can be found there, already revealing a taste for meticulous details. Across the street we have Jardin 17. This garden is a sort of a private jungle. The discrete pathway and the elegant yet modern decoration speak of Barragán’s love for nature. A water mirror and a small building are carefully placed as to not disturb the peaceful harmony of an exuberant vegetation that seems to grow at will, creating the perfect match between natural and human work.
Giraldi house is just a couple of blocks away. It was Barragán’s last oeuvre, a sort of testament of what he thought –and how he felt– about architecture. The jacaranda tree at the center of the property synthesizes the everlasting character of Luis Barragán style: the marriage between the modern and the classic.
Luis Barragán house and the rest of the properties have their reservations open for guided tours in which you will learn all their secrets and stories, as well as the insight on the genius mind that made these places possible.
